Toddlers have a great time at Healthyway Dairy!
What’s not to like about these photos–seven toddlers and their moms had a fun tour of Healthyway Dairy last week. The children were especially lucky because there was a three-week old Jersey calf to play with, along with the chickens. Irene Nelson of the Santa Fe raw milk dairy hosted the farm tour for the children and their moms.
The idea for the tour began when Whitney, a young mom with a cute two-year old named Johanna [that’s her on the left in the green checked shirt and pigtails], took a friend and both of their toddlers along to pick up raw milk from Healthyway Dairy. The friend tagged along because her son Edmond really loves cows! They enjoyed the trip so much that Whitney showed photos of the farm trip to her moms group. Immediately all the other mothers wanted to take their children to visit the farm too. So Whitney contacted Irene Nelson of Healthy Way Dairy and arranged a farm tour for the toddlers.
Irene greeted them at the farm and let the children get close to the cute Jersey calf and run around with it. All the children got a chance to admire the calf and pet it. A little while later, Irene and the moms helped the children climb around on a tractor, which they really enjoyed. [The two-year old boy in the blue shirt is Luke. The little boy with the white shirt and baseball cap is Nolen.]
After playing with the calf and climbing on the tractor, it was time to have fun with the chickens. Irene got a bucket of feed for the chickens and let the children reach in to get food to throw to the chickens. Johanna [in the orange shirt on her first visit to the farm] loved the roosters best because they kept crowing at her.
All the moms and two-year-olds had fun at the farm and some of the moms bought raw milk for the first time. They really loved the milk, which doesn’t surprise me, because I drink Healthy Way Dairy milk too, and it is soooo good!
In the photos below are, 1st photo: left to right, Oliver (red-head in plaid jumpsuit), Luke, Zach, John, and Johanna. 2nd photo: Nolen (left), Zach and chickens. 3rd photo: left to right, Zophia (green checked jumpsuit), Johanna, Oliver, Zach, and Anna.
The next row of photos features, left to right, Edmond with the chickens, Luke and Johanna with the calf, and Nolen with some chickens. I think Edmond really goes for chickens too!
And now here are some of the moms! On the left are Edmond and his mom Angela. On the right are Zophia and her mom Lotus. Of course, Johanna’s mom Whitney, who arranged the fun tour, is behind the camera and is not in any of the photos.

Update September 20, 2014: Bill and Irene Nelson are good people who care about their cows and helping others be healthier by drinking their raw milk. Watch a superb documentary about life on their dairy farm here.
I really appreciate this two level story. Johnna’s Grampa is a long time friend from our days in the Army. He moved back to Texas, I stayed in Maryland. When I was a second grader,(about 1952), in a DC school, we went on a field trip to a farm in Virginia where we did the same things featured here. I think we even had a chance to milk some of the cows. We even took back to school some of the raw milk and made cottage cheese! We actually let that “evil” raw milk sit out at room temp and become something different and just as healthy as the original stuff! That of course was long before the govt began its over-reaching into our lives to protect us from this “Evil Substance,” Raw, or better yet FRESH milk! There is no place in Maryland where one can buy fresh milk, but I can buy Amish raw milk cheese at a local organic market. If I want real, fresh milk, I must go to Pennsylvania!
I didn’t want to only rant, but also to commend you on your efforts to provide the public with real and real healthy alternatives to the Frankenmilk that is on the shelves of most super markets. Bravo! (I do expect that NSA is monitoring this transmission!)
Do you know of Alex Jones in Austin? He’s a pistol!
Keep up the good work
I’m glad you liked the story. I’ve known Johanna’s granddad for many years. Of course, he’s the one who told me about this farm tour. I couldn’t resist the adorable photos, but I did also want to promote one of our very good raw milk dairies in the Houston area.
I don’t know Alex Jones, but I do know some good people in Austin who are also working to protect our food rights, people like Judith McGeary of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance.
I’ve read that raw milk cheese is just as nutritious as raw milk. At least you can get that. Good luck to you!
