Lawsuit Helped Defeat HB 75 To Allow Raw Milk Delivery
An April 21, 2011, KHOU.com article reported four illnesses in the Dallas, TX, area that were caused by drinking raw milk. The article says that “four people, three of which [sic] were children, become seriously ill after drinking raw milk, according to state health officials.” The 57 year old woman, who became ill after drinking a small glass of milk from Lavon Farms, has filed suit against the farm through the law firm of Simon & Luke, a firm that specializes in food poisoning lawsuits. Lavon Farms has been barred from selling raw milk pending further tests. The article quotes Zachary Thompson, director of the Dallas County Health Department: “We’re going to go with the CDC recommendations that individuals not partake of this milk.” and says that “the Texas Medical Association and the Dallas County Health Department are issuing alerts about the potential dangers of unpasteurized products.”
Apparently, the subject of these illnesses was included in the testimony against Texas House Bill 75 that died in committee. HB 75 would have allowed licensed raw milk dairy farmers to sell milk at farmers’ markets and other agreed-upon locations. The bill was defeated by a combination of the testimony against raw milk from the medical establishment and the opposition of the dairy industry, who must have noticed and are afraid of the increasing interest and market for raw dairy products.
Does the lawsuit and testimony against HB 75 imply an increased attempt to limit (or ban) access to raw milk in Texas?
