Livestreamed Debate, Dec. 4th: “Don’t Eat Anything with a Face”
I just learned of a fascinating debate that will be livestreamed on December 4, 2013, 6:45 pm EST (5:45 pm Central). The subject is “Don’t Eat Anything with a Face.”
Here’s what the debate is all about, according to the debate website:
According to a 2009 poll, around 1% of American adults reported eating no animal products. In 2011 that number rose to 2.5%–more than double, but still dwarfed by the 48% who reported eating meat, fish or poultry at all of their meals. In this country, most of us are blessed with an abundance of food and food choices. So taking into account our health, the environment and ethical concerns, which diet is best? Are we or aren’t we meant to be carnivores?
Those debating FOR the premise are Dr. Neal Barnard and Gene Baur. Those AGAINST are Dr. Chris Masterjohn and Joel Salatin.
I am familiar with Chris Masterjohn and Joel Salatin. They are well-known to members of the Weston A. Price Foundation; however, since not everyone may know about Chris and Joel, I’ve included a brief introduction to them as well as to the debaters FOR the topic.
Chris Masterjohn, author of the blogs The Daily Lipid and Cholesterol-and-health, is an advocate of the necessity of eating animal fats and is currently a researcher studying the interactions between vitamins A, D, and K. He is a strong supporter of humane treatment of farm animals and sustainable farming practices. He followed veganism for several years with serious health consequences. He was brought back to health after reading Nutrition and Physical Degeneration and changing to a diet based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price. Read his story. . .
Joel Salatin is a full-time, third-generation farmer at Polyface Farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He “passionately defends small farms, local food systems, and the right to opt out of the conventional food paradigm.” He is the author of several books, including how-tos on various aspects of farming. One of his latest books is Folks, This Ain’t Normal: A Farmer’s Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World. He is featured in the movie Fresh.
Neal Barnard is the founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). He advocates a low-fat, whole foods, plant-based diet, and his organization, PCRM, promotes a vegan diet. T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study, is on the PCRM advisory board.
Gene Baur, is the co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, a rescue organization dedicated to farmed animals. Farm Sanctuary promotes animal welfare, animal protection, and vegetarianism/veganism. Baur investigates factory farming and is an advocate for animal protection and was featured in the documentary Forks Over Knives, a documentary promoting whole foods veganism.
The debate is scheduled for 6:45 pm, which is probably Eastern Standard Time since the live debate will be at the Kaufman Center in New York.
According to the announcement by the Weston A. Price Foundation, the “debate will also be nationally broadcast on over 220 NPR stations and some PBS stations.”
The subject of this debate is of great importance to everyone, and the broadcast will reach many people who may not know much about the two sides.

i have been taking an 81 yr old rereitd schoolteacher, female, to a herbologist. In the 10 yrs she’s been on MD prescribed sleeping pills, she now suffers memory loss. She is off of them and her memory’s returning. On 10 yrs with Fosamax, in 2003 and 2005 she had knee replacement surgery, 2010 boasted a broken wrist, red blotches all over her hands and arms, and a sore swollen left top femur, as well as 2 extracions of dead teeth, 3 unusual hammertoes and pain in the tops of her feet. With the prescriptioned herbal formulae, all the aches and pains went away, and the red blotches are less frequent and fade away. The 2010 insert for Fosamx stated that an oral surgeon seeing a patient on Fosamax and extracting dead teeth should consider discontinuation of this drug. but her MD refuses to take her off it. She was also on zoloft which states urinary incontinence as a side effect, which she also had. the MD si doing a slow wean-off zoloft, but with the herbs she has not wet her bed in 3 weeks. Dr. Sellman knows me personally.
